Liefhebbers van italo en onvervormde electro hebben weer een goede maand.
Niet alleen zijn er een paar nieuwe schijven op Creme Organization, maar er is ook een nieuwe Moustache.
Mark du Mosch en Mauno Kalevi komen met Kirjastolaulu/Space Helmet, een plaat die de gayste
dansvloeren in de wereld zal opleuken met zijn retro italodisco, waarop het vast uitstekend rimmen is,
maar die bij mij niets anders losmaakt dan een ‘ja leuk hoor’ ipv de rits van mijn broek. Rim-X aka Vincent koreman Viceland Op Creme dan ‘Count Doekoe’ van Pussycat, vast weer iets waar homeboy Legowelt iets mee te maken heeft. Retro electro met een hoog hiphop gehalte en als dan ook nog die schuiffel invalt in ‘Crack is Whack’ (wat trouwens niet waar is), vermoed ik helemaal de hand van een zekere heer Wolfers. Lekker plaatje dit. De andere nieuwe Creme scheibe, ‘Nagasaki Nightriders’ is niet helemaal mijn ding, een beetje van die electro waar je niet echt heel veel kanten mee opkunt. Te langzaam voor de dansvloer en te saai voor de huiskamer, zoiets. ‘Wake Up’ is wel het prijsnummer, hypnotiserende acid, die het, mits opgepitched, goed zal doen op de dansvloeren.

Sneak-Thief/Polygamy Boys “Parallel Percepts E.p.” (Moustache): la neo-etichetta di Rotterdam fondata da
David Vunk (entrambi nella formazione dei Pussycat) arruola nella squadra Michel Morin aka Sneak-Thief e il ’socio’ Stephan Busche con cui divide, dal 2003, il progetto Polygamy Boys. Il nome del canadese
(ormai trapiantato a Berlino) diventa sempre più ricorrente nella produzione nord-europea dopo apparizioni
di spessore su Lasergun, Beautycase, Voltage Musique, Crème Organization, Mighty Robot e Klakson alle quali oggi s’aggiunge un extended play che riflette, ancora, la sua unica visione di musica meccanica in cui confluiscono elettronica ed r’n'b. “All Let Go” è un ottimo esempio di electro-funky-pop, carico nei grooves ed incisivo nella parte vocale mentre “Der Herzensbrecher” appare più sognante (con melodie bleepy zigzaganti) ma sempre col giusto mood per far muovere a ritmo anche i più restii. Il lato b lo realizza insieme al citato Busche tenendo a mente la new-wave e il post-electro-pop (”Life Support”, in cui si riprende il meccanicismo di Dopplereffekt ma trasportandolo su ritmi meno basici) e la gothic-italo-disco-ebm di “Russian Roulette” (nella Loser Mix, il che lascerebbe presagire l’esistenza di una Winner Mix), perfettamente in linea con le trascorse esperienze su Bunker, Space Factory, GoodLife e KarateMusik.Inserito da

Mark Du Mosch “Strenght E.p.” (Moustache): già coinvolto in coppia col finnico Mauno Kalevi Mark Du Mosch si ripresenta su Moustache con un nuovo e.p. da solista che segue il filo di “Let It Go” uscito nel 2006 sulla Keynote di Otto Koppius. Se “Airforce” è ben conficcata nella disco-house alla Bangkok Impact & Co. “Faith” smuove qualche linea melodica in più attraverso gli arpeggi bleepy tipici dell’autore. Poi “Kolossus”, con le sue referenze
‘legoweltiane’ e disegni stilistici alla Crème Organization, “Midnight” che segue da vicino la polverosa italo-disco e “Saturday Night Live” segata dalle ritmiche della disco e dalle chitarre del funky sormontate da decisi blips. Lo troverete ‘avvolto’ nella classica confezione Moustache ovvero il white-label che fa tutto molto più ‘underground’.

A label still in its infancy that has caught our attention for their simply brilliant releases is Moustache Records from Holland. The label is based in Rotterdam and run by the legendary mixmaster David Vunk. His DJ mixes were featured regularly on online radio station The Cybernetic Broadcasting System (RIP) and can now be heard on Magic Waves radio. Vunk sometimes makes steamy electro jams as Pussycat for the Crème label from The Hague, and recently collaborated with Alden Tyrell on the fistingly fine “Lord of the Cockrings” slammer for Moustache.

At the moment Sebastian and I are buying and listening to a lot of (West Coast) electro, (Chicago) house and italo. Moustache seems to effortlessly blend these styles together across their eight releases to create some sort of fresh jacking italo sound. We’ve both been into a lot of the Dutch scene for a while now, avidly following labels like Bunker, Crème, Viewlexx and Clone, and now it seems Moustache has rightly earned its place among these. Material on the label has been provided by a healthy roster of resident artists that include Mark du Mosch, Mauno Kalevi, Polygamy Boys, Sneak Thief, Flemming Dalum and veteran italo heartthrob Fred Ventura, who teamed up with Alden Tyrell for the mighty tear-jerker “Memories”.

We had the pleasure of meeting David Vunk at a recent Cocadisco party where he spun a fantastic set of beautiful italo records together for a strange London crowd. He’s a super nice guy and he’s a fan of Heartbreak too. Hopefully we can do something together in the future.
